When large Indian business groups failed or were constrained - the precedents on record
Facts as of
Profile of the Adani Group: its companies and FY26 figures, policy and regulatory touchpoints by government in office, and the status as of 12 October 2026 of Indian, US and foreign proceedings, with the group's stated responses.
A dossier is a fact file. It records what is on record and who said what; it does not give a verdict. It is not scored and earns or loses no party points. How dossiers are written.
The Adani Group describes itself as a diversified group of listed companies focused on transport and utility infrastructure, with ports, power generation, transmission, renewable energy, gas distribution, airports, cement and media among its businesses [1]. Its own timeline traces it to Adani Exports in 1988 and to the Mundra port from 1994-2001 [2]. Group-reported FY26 figures include capex of about Rs 1.53 lakh crore and EBITDA of about Rs 94,830 crore [4]; Adani Enterprises reported Rs 1,02,943 crore of consolidated total income [3].
This dossier covers three strands. The first is policy touchpoints: port and SEZ growth under successive governments, the 2019-20 airport privatisation, and acquisitions from 2014 to 2023, each dated against the Union government in office. The second is the group’s legal record. Hindenburg Research’s January 2023 allegations were examined by SEBI and the Supreme Court. SEBI’s September 2025 orders found the related-party allegations not established, and two September 2026 settlements closed other proceedings without admission or denial [13][14][15][16]. In the United States, the November 2024 criminal and civil actions ended for the three appearing defendants through a prosecution motion to dismiss and a consent civil judgment on 10 August 2026, while counts against five co-defendants remained under consideration [7][8][10].
The third strand is foreign contracts: Kenya cancelled two agreements, Bangladesh’s review committee recommended arbitration over the Godda agreement, and Adani Green withdrew from Sri Lanka’s wind projects [18][19][20]. Each such event is recorded with the group’s stated position. Political funding data are limited to what media analyses of the electoral-bond data show [22].
Every allegation is labelled with who made it, its current status and the response, and nothing here is a verdict. The notShown section lists what the record cannot establish.
